Vision vs. Intention…do we need both?
As we step into this new year, I want to share something that’s been on my heart: the profound power of having a vision for your life.
Not just the kind you see with your eyes, but the kind you carry deep within—rooted in faith, hope, and purpose. The kind that lures you out of bed in the morning and puts a big fat smile on your face, just thinking about it. :)
We talk a lot about living with more intention in this community, and it got me thinking - what's the real difference between having a "vision" for our life versus an "intention" for how we want to live?
Well, I decided to do a little research and here's what I learned:
Vision: is more about the “What” and the “Why”
Vision is the big picture, a clear and inspiring image of the life you desire or feel called to live.
It reflects your values, purpose, and the deeper “why” behind your actions.
Vision focuses on the future. It answers questions like, Where am I going? What does my life look like when I’m aligned with my truest self and God’s plan?
Vision is broader and often aspirational. It might feel like a dream or an inspired possibility that energizes and motivates you.
Example: “I want to live a life of simplicity, connection, and joy, rooted in a deep faith.”
Proverbs 29:18 reminds us, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” This is one of those scripture verses that has always stuck with me. Having a clear, intentional vision for our life gives more meaning to the small steps forward we take each day. It both grounds us and propels us towards a life we deeply desire.
Intention: is more about the “How” and the “Now”
Intention is about action, the daily choices and mindset that align with your vision.
It focuses on how you show up in the present moment to move closer to your vision.
Intention is grounded in the here and now. It answers questions like, How can I live today in alignment with my values? What small steps can I take to embody my vision right now?
Intention is practical and actionable. It’s about setting a purposeful tone and staying committed to what matters most.
Example: “Today, I will prioritize rest and connection by setting aside time to pray and unplug from distractions.”
The verdict: We need both.
As you begin this year, perhaps take a moment to reflect:
What do you feel God calling you toward in 2025?
How can your vision for this year bring you closer to the slower, simpler, more meaningful life you desire?
What small intentional steps can you take to align with this vision?
Here's to a living into our vision for a joyous, unhurried year!
With love and intention, Julie
